Silvia Modica

I remember I used to be attracted to the Disney and Looney Tunes cartoon characters. Sketching my favorite characters on wood and painting them in tempera was my favorite pass time for as far back as I can remember. Once the switch of my passion for expressing and communicating through art was turned on, it was no turning back.

Throughout the years, I had been fortunate enough to be able to travel and explore many European countries, such as Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria just to name a few; I even made it home for a few years at some of the places I landed my feet on. The extensive traveling allowed me to absorb different cultures, learn much of their native folklores, as well as admire the art work of many famous European masters and local artists.

After graduating from the University of Puerto Rico with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in the late 60s, because I was so intrigued and touched by all the works of so many famous artists,  I decided to enroll a School of Arts to learn more about charcoal and pastel paintings. I returned to the United States in the mid 90s and continued my creative journey at the Arts School of West Miami and School of Arts at Miami-Dade Community College.

Now, while I am working with various media including oil, acrylic and mixed media, I continue to learn and express myself better through new styles. These past few years, I have been striving to become better each time I created a new painting and explored a new medium. I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to present my work in numerous art exhibitions in the Miami area where I was  placed in first places in every contest and Fair that I have participated. Today, I can confidently say that I am more versatile comparing to years ago. I can move around quite easily in terms of styles, colors and media.

Artist Statement
I speak my heart through art, as for my desire to discover new frontiers will continue to be a lifelong learning journey.
