Ed King

Ed King is fortunate because he gets to claim two amazing cities as his hometown. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1974 and raised in South Miami where he began sketching and painting when he was eight years old. He later graduated in Cleveland from Orange High School’s fine art
program as the vocational student of the year.

A graduate of International Fine Arts College (Art Institute of Miami), Ed has made Miami his home for over 20 years. He currently develops the artwork for the Kaleidoscope Conspiracy universe in his home studio in North Miami Beach. Ed enjoys being involved in many aspects of the arts.
In college, he worked as a writer for Break Magazine and a news correspondent for WVFS in Tallahassee. He also has experience with performance art including acting on stage and writing, shooting and editing short films. As a professional graphic designer, Ed has worked as a senior designer in advertising agencies. He has also instructed graphic design and video editing for Miami Ad School and the Bass Museum of Art. A songwriter and self-trained guitarist, Ed has also played in several bands since he was fifteen years old. On painting breaks, he unwinds by playing old tunes on his favorite acoustic guitar.

We each see the world differently because we are not looking at the world only with our eyes, but with hearts and souls as well. These visions converge in a multifarious arrangement of memories and emotions, which create a kaleidoscope of the mind. The varying layers of our souls, love, and time are woven into a fabric which we have not yet been able to fully explain or appreciate. No matter how sophisticated our ciphers, the answer to why we are here remains an enigma.

The enormity of these concepts have stirred in my mind for many years and eventually began to take form in a labor of sketches and paintings that I call the Kaleidoscope Conspiracy. My inspiration is derived from my childhood fascination concerning the complicated relationship between science, nature and humanity. I take pleasure in spending the small hours of each day trying to weave together the various meanings of these multifaceted concepts into my artwork. Despite the intensity of the subject matter, I do not feel the artwork would be served by rendering it that way. Instead, I feel our interpretation of the world depends on our ability to jettison our preconceptions and revisit these concepts of consequence through the eyes of a child. Furthermore, I feel the allegorical nature of each piece creates a context for the underlying themes which are widely accessible to an audience of all ages.

The artwork of the Kaleidoscope Conspiracy can be described as neo-pop. It features characters and landscapes painted in bright colors and outlined in black lines while the situations and themes of each painting serve as King’s personal interpretation of the world. In addition, prominent features of the artwork include black swatches that give the appearance that the objects and landscapes have been stitched into the painting. The swatches, combined with the vivid scenes and child-like wonder of each piece, comprise the inimitable components which help retain the neo-pop sensibility of each painting.
