Artist Statement
I Imagine a peacock adorned with feathers covered in poetry. As a private collage artist and poet, I have dreamed of implementing this idea since the emergence of the artist’s flamingos in Miami and while viewing other art in public places. The peacocks are a perfect canvas allowing a palette suitable for decoupage. Having the idea coming to fruition through a charitable event is a definite plus. It has been suggested I add other senses to the work such as sound interaction–it is a possibility.
I plan to contact renowned poets I have come to know through the years and mix their donated poems with work of favorite poets from the past and affix the poems as groups of peacock feathers. I see the piece offset with acrylic paint and layered with paper feathers all covered with layers of decoupage glue as waterproofing
I usually work concurrently on several poems and art as ideas come to me. My ideas come from all sources and I jot them down in a notebook to be combined at a later date. I am now combining poetry and painting in a series of art pieces. "My mission statement as a writer and artist is to enhance the enjoyment of poetry through the written word, reaching as many people as possible on significant issues both serious and frivolous." I feel my art is enhancing that effort, especially the plans for the peacocks. I imagine people enjoying the reading of the poems affixed to the peacock and telling others, going to the library and checking out books by the poets. Art makes poetry touchable. Viewing the work is essential to achieving my goal, my purpose, provoking people’s involvement.
